Van Buren girl killed in accident

VAN BUREN -- A 13-year-old Van Buren girl died and a 15-year-old girl was critically injured after being struck by an SUV while walking down a city street Saturday night, according to police.

The 13-year-old, who wasn't identified by Van Buren police Monday, died Sunday morning at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, police spokesman Jonathan Wear said.

He said the 15-year-old, whose name also hasn't been released, was listed in critical condition on Sunday. He said he didn't have a condition update for her Monday.

Wear said the two girls were walking in the roadway in the 800 block of North 28th Street about 10:45 p.m. Saturday when they were hit by a Dodge Durango driven by a woman, who he wouldn't identify. The driver, who was alone in the Durango, wasn't cited or arrested pending completion of an investigation, he said.

That section of North 28th Street where the girls were hit has no sidewalk or shoulder, Wear said, and the two girls were walking with their backs to oncoming traffic.

An accident reconstructionist and a detective were called to the scene to investigate the incident Saturday, Wear said.

No other details were available Monday.
