Police: Texting driver arrested on drug charges

FAYETTEVILLE -- A Fayetteville woman police was arrested on charges Friday after police said they found drugs on her when she arrived at the Washington County Jail.

Police stopped Shana Perry, 23, who was driving a moped near College Avenue and Township Street at 10:49 a.m. Friday because they said she was texting while driving. They said she gave them a false name. She later told officers she'd given a false name because of a probation violation, according to arrest records.

Officers asked Perry if she had any illegal drugs on her and warned her that taking drugs to jail would be a felony charge of furnishing prohibited articles. After arriving at the Washington County Detention Center she said she had a bag of marijuana in her bra. A gram of marijuana was found.

Officers requested a strip search, and deputies discovered a bag in Perry's rectum. She told police it had between a quarter to half gram of methamphetamine. Deputies also found a second bag they said contained 0.75 grams of methamphetamine.

Perry was arrested in connection with violation of probation or a suspended sentence, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, felony possession of drug paraphernalia, felony furnishing prohibited articles, tampering with physical evidence, texting while driving, obstructing government operations, driving on a suspended or revoked license, resisting arrest and no proof of insurance.

She was being held Sunday in the Washington County Detention Center on $7,500 bond.
