Spring Hill's girls maintain grip on 2A

HORESHOE BEND -- Dominant porbably doesn't adequately describe Spring Hill's performance Monday at the Class 2A girls state golf tournament.

The Lady Bears took the top three individual spots and won the event by 55 strokes, capturing their third consecutive state title at The Course on Turkey Mountain.

Senior Lakyn Kidd took the medalist honor with a 12-over-par 85, clipping teammate Christi Chambless, a sophomore, by three strokes and besting her sister Mallory, a junior, by six.

"We've had a great group of girls come through here lately," said Spring Hill Coach Revel Kidd, also the father of Lakyn and Mallory. "They didn't lose a match this year. They all have gotten better as the season has gone along, even improving over last year. They are all good about going out and working on their game daily."

The top three Spring Hill golfers combined to shoot a 264. Foreman was second with a 319, four shots ahead of third-place finisher and tournament host Salem. Kaci Barnett of Salem was the top golfer not from Spring Hill, finishing fourth with a 96. The top two Foreman golfers were Myranda Gross and Kylie Cowan, who each shot a 106 to finished tied for eighth.

The individual honor is the second for Lakyn Kidd, who won the event as a sophomore but finished second by a single stroke last year. Even though she had Monday's best score, Lakyn said she thought she could have even done better.

"I had a couple of bad holes because of putting," she said. "I had great drives all day and was able to hit the greens well. But I got to the greens. I had a few good shots, but I also had half of them lip out. They just didn't want to go in for me today. But from tee to green, I was pretty satisfied. I played pretty well."

Lakyn's father also agreed on her short game.

"She could have had a really great day if she had putted better, " Revel Kidd said of his oldest daughter. "I think she could have finished in the 70s. Lakyn has been our No. 1 golfer for four years, but the other three are beginning to close the gap on her, which in turn has made her a better golfer. It's been back and forth all year on who will end up as our top three. Any one of them could go out there and win and any time."

Spring Hill's No. 4 golfer, senior Sydney Orr, finished seventh to make the all-state team which consists of the top nine finishers.

Spring Hill and Foreman also finished first and second last year, with the Lady Bears winning by 36 shots. The same four Lady Bears finished in the top seven in 2013 as well.

The top three Spring Hill golfers will represent Class 2A at the Overall Championship in just over two weeks at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock
