Baby boomer expert

to lead workshop

LITTLE ROCK — Author and baby boomer expert Carol Orsborn will lead a conference Oct. 4 on how churches can better reach adults and senior citizens. The program, “Builders, Boomers and Busters: Bridging the 21st Century,” will be held at St. James United Methodist Church, 321 Pleasant Valley Drive.

Orsborn is the author of 21 books, including her most recent, Fierce With Age: Chasing God and Squirrels in Brooklyn. She also serves as editor-in-chief of Fierce With Age, the Digest of Boomer Wisdom, Inspiration and Spirituality.

Other presenters include the Rev. Will Randolph, an expert on aging and older adult ministry with the General Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church and motivational speaker Randy Frazier of Little Rock.

The conference is open to the public. Registration is $25 and includes materials and lunch. Registration is available online at arumc.org under the calendar tab.

LR church to host

Q Commons event

LITTLE ROCK — Pleasant Valley Church of Christ will host a Q Commons event 7-9 p.m. Oct. 9. The program will be held in more than 60 cities around the country and bring together more than 10,000 people to talk about how Christians can work together for the good of their communities.

Q is an organization started by pastor and author Gabe Lyons in 2007 in an effort to encourage Christians to work together for the common good.

The event will include a mix of live simulcast talks and presentations by local leaders. The Rev. Tim Keller, pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York and best-selling author, will speak via live link, and so will Ann Voskamp, known for her best-seller One Thousand Gifts.

Local speakers include Jon Harrison, president of VIP2; Georgia Mjartan, executive director of Our House; and Darrin Williams, chief executive officer of Southern Bancorp.

Christians of all denominations are welcome. Cost is $29 and registration is available online at qideas.org/qcommons/littlerock. Space is limited. The church is at 10900 Rodney Parham Road.

Buddhist society sets

meditation retreat

LITTLE ROCK — The Ecumenical Buddhist Society of Little Rock will have a Vipassana retreat Oct. 10-12. The retreat, “Making Room for Everything: The Nourishing Power of Presence,” will be held at the society’s main meditation hall, 1516 W. Third St. Instructors will be Terry Furstenau and Joe McCormack of the Show Me Dharma Center in Missouri.

The program is suitable for beginners and advanced meditators and will include sitting and walking meditation, teachings and discussions. Individual conferences with instructors will be available.

The program includes a public talk at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10. Cost is $10. The retreat is 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Oct. 11 and participants are urged to take a sack lunch. The program continues from 8:30 a.m.-noon Oct. 12. Cost is a sliding scale from $70-$120 based on the participant’s ability to pay.
