Baxter County sheriff warns of telephone scam

MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. — Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery is warning of a telephone scam that targets customers of North Arkansas Electric Cooperative.

Montgomery said Monday that a caller from the 915 area code is contacting NAEC customers and telling them their account is past due. The sheriff says the caller tells the customer that service will be disconnected unless the customer pays over the phone with a credit card.

Montgomery says local NAEC officials said the calls are scams and that the utility does not make calls asking customers to settle accounts over the phone with a credit card.
