Officials postpone I-49 lane closures

Interstate 49 lane closures planned for Saturday and Sunday are being rescheduled, Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department officials announced.

A project to widen 2.6 miles of I-49 between Wagon Wheel Road in Springdale and Arkansas 264 in Lowell is underway. Pavement work has been completed on the northbound side, although the inside lane will remain closed until a median barrier wall is finished, according to a department news release.

Plans to reduce southbound traffic to one lane Saturday and Sunday have been canceled because of the War Eagle Fair, the release states, adding that the Oct. 25 homecoming at the University of Arkansasat Fayetteville also makes it unlikely lanes will be closed then.

Department Director Scott Bennett said the department is evaluating options for completing the work and "will announce a new schedule" soon.
