Art From A To Z

Bazaars, markets make shopping festive

Maggie Malloy's art "ranges from A to Z."

The Fort Smith artist says she creates work that varies from mixed media to painting. Her subjects are mostly remembered from her travels. Malloy's prints feature a rooster, a campsite in Maine, a contemporary saddle, a bicycle from Key West and a tropical flower, she says.

Malloy is one of the 17 artists participating in the Holiday Market & Unframed Art Sale Dec. 5-19 at the Center for Art and Education in Van Buren. Along with prints, Malloy will be selling canvases and cards. Owen Shackelford of the art center says the artists bring in unframed or framed art, jewelry, pottery and a variety of other work to sell during the event. The center will take a commission only from the sale of art hung on the wall, but 95 percent of the items will be placed on tables or in bins, he says. Artists from Van Buren, Fort Smith and eastern Oklahoma are part of this year's show.

The annual event has been extended this year, continuing through three Fridays and two full weekends, Shackelford says. He looks forward to the market because "it brings a lot of people to our facility that may not have ever seen it before." Once they see what is offered, they almost always want to come back to the Center for Art and Education and become regular patrons, he adds.

"We're just a little hidden gem in Van Buren housed in an old Catholic church," he says.

Each artist serves two three-hour shifts during the market, so at least one artist will be present at all times, Shackelford says. Malloy will be at the market from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 7 and 14. This will be Malloy's fifth year participating, and she believes it is illuminating for people looking for holiday gift items to be able to meet the artist.

"I enjoy visiting with the people who come in and getting to talk to them about their holiday and wish them a happy holiday."
