Mills celebrates 98th birthday

Ree Mills of Springdale celebrated her 98th birthday on March 15 with a party at Western Sizzlin in Springdale. Mills' son Jim Mills hosted the event, which was also a birthday celebration for Ree Mills' great-granddaughter, Paula Turner.

Both received numerous gifts and well-wishes.

Mills was born March 17, 1916. She was also honored during a celebration at the Springdale Senior Center on March 17 that included a cake by Myrtle Ray.

Governor's School chooses juniors

Twenty-three Fayetteville High School juniors have been selected to attend the 2014 Arkansas Governor's School at Hendrix College, the school district announced March 19.

Summer Bush, Kendall Coats, Michelle Peng, Abby Sikes and Emily Waller will study social science at the school. Brock DeMark, Chidubem Egbosimba, Sarah Leflar, Chioma Okoroafor, Matt Parisi, Michelle Qui and Sarah Sullivan will study natural science.

Samantha Doss, Oliver Fowler, Peter Gea, Alexander Mueller and Abigail Parker will attend in mathematics. Saxyam Gautam and Melissa McCann have been accepted to the visual arts program.

Carly Page and Jayleen Serrano will study English and language arts, while Catherine Pinter will study drama. Joshua Sadinsky was chosen for the instrumental music program.

Jeremiah Griffin was also selected as an alternate for the choral music program.

Governor's School is a six-week intensive program that is in its 35th year.

Johnson wins museum award

Kate Johnson, director of the Clinton House Museum in Fayetteville, has received the 2014 Distinguished Museum Professional of the Year Award from the Arkansas Museum Association.Johnson received the award March 20 at the group's annual awards banquet in North Little Rock. The award recognizes an individual who has worked two or more years as a museum professional and who exemplifies professionalism, teamwork, creativity and vision. Johnson began working at the museum five years ago and has helped renovate the museum and increase national media coverage. Museum attendance has increased by 250 percent during her tenure. Johnson also facilitate former President Bill Clinton's first visit to the museum for the dedication of the First Lady's Garden.

Honor society inducts 120

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith inducted 120 students into Alpha Lambda Delta, a national honor society for freshmen, recently. To be selected, one must be a full-time, first-time freshman pursuing a bachelor's degree who has at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
