Repaving To Close Maple Street In Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE -- A seven-block section of Maple Street, on the north side of the University of Arkansas campus, will be closed in two phases during the next two weeks while workers with the city Transportation Division repave the street.

Maple will be closed weekdays today through Monday between Gregg and Leverett avenues, according to a city news release.

Construction will then shift to the section of Maple between Leverett and Garland avenues Tuesday through Aug. 8.

Both lanes of traffic will be closed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Maple will be open on nights and weekends. Detours will be marked.

The work is intended to smooth areas of Maple cracked and riddled with potholes. Earlier this summer, the city's Water and Sewer Operations Division repaired a sewer line and installed a larger water main along the street.

Members of the Fayetteville Town and Gown Advisory Committee have discussed a complete overhaul of the east-west connector street with numerous pedestrian crossings.

An additional lane could be added to eliminate an awkward shift at Leverett Avenue for eastbound drivers. Crosswalks could be redesigned; sidewalks could be widened; streetlights could be added; and Oakland Avenue could be converted to a one-way street running north from Maple.

Those improvements likely will not occur until at least summer 2016.
