Summers marks

97th birthday

Tim Summers Sr. celebrated his 97th birthday on Tuesday. He is a lifelong resident of Carroll County.

He was born July 22, 1917, to Jim Bob and Nora Summers. He was one of nine children.

Summers was married to Blanche Swofford Summers for 64 years before her death in 2002. He is retired from Kraft Foods in Berryville and was a farmer.

His family includes siblings Johnny Summers of Berryville and Jessie Smith of Harrison; sons Vernon "Speed" Summers of Berryville and Tim Summers Jr. of Bentonville; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Another son, Loren, died previously.

He currently resides at Peachtree Village at Holiday Island.

Bentonville alumni

host Sweet Jam '14

The Bentonville High School Alumni Association will host Sweet Jam 2014, a free community concert to benefit the group's scholarship fund. The concert will be from 2 to 9:30 p.m. July 26 at Blowing Springs Park in Bella Vista.

Performers will include The Dean's List, Restless Natives, Downtown Georgia Brown, Audrey Gilbreath and Mountain Shore. The event will include drawings for door prizes.

The concert is free, but donations will be accepted. The Bentonville High School Alumni Association was founded in 2011.

UA announces

Honors Fellows

The Honors College at the University of Arkansas recently announced its 2014 Fellows. The group is comprised of more than 60 top high school students including 30 from the 12 counties in Northwest Arkansas.

Honors College Fellows receive $50,000 to cover tuition, books, room and board and registration over four years.

he fellowship funds can also be combined with other scholarships and grants, such as the more than $1 million in study abroad and research grants that the Honors College awarded to students this past academic year.

Bauman receives

Mizzou scholarship

Caroline Bauman of Fayetteville, a senior journalism major at the University of Missouri, is the 2014 recipient of the C.W. Gusewelle journalism scholarship.

The $2,000 scholarship is named for a longtime reporter, editorial writer, foreign editor and columnist for The Kansas City Star. It is awarded each year to a senior journalism student attending a school in the University of Missouri system.

Bauman has served as an editor and a reporter at the Columbia Missourian. In 2013, she interned for the Financial Times in Brussels, Belgium.

She is currently a summer intern at the Star.

Artist's Laboratory

wins innovations grant

The Artist's Laboratory Theatre in Fayetteville has received a $15,000 Artistic Innovations grant from the Mid-America Arts Alliance in Kansas City, Mo. The award is part of $207,800 in grants awarded by the group for work to be presented from July 1 of this year through June 30, 2015.

A total of 137 grant proposals were submitted during an open call, and 30 artists and organizations were selected to submit more detailed proposals. Artist's Laboratory Theatre will use the grant to support public performances of The New Now, an interactive, environmental series of plays that focuses on human interaction with and reliance upon social media and technology.

The first performance in the series is planned in October at Tri Cycle Farms in Fayetteville.

Bentonville names

Outstanding Citizens

Sam Covert, Tina Lewis and Club Marketing Services are the winners of the city of Bentonville's Outstanding Citizen Awards for the second quarter of 2014.

Covert is a student at Ruth Hale Barker Middle School, where he is a member of the student council. He is a straight-A student whose hobbies include playing guitar, football and singing in the choir.

Lewis is the volunteer director of the Upward basketball and cheerleading program, a ministry of the Bentonville Church of the Nazarene. The league includes more than 450 participants and 100 volunteers.

Club Marketing Services, a division of ASM, won the award for their support of Bentonville nonprofit Havenwood. The business has provided strong volunteer support for events including Havenwood's Angel Gala and their annual Bike Ride.

Nominations for third quarter Outstanding Citizens are due Sept. 19.

Tontitown Museum

gets operating grant

The Tontitown Historical Museum has been awarded a $2,500 small museum operating grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council. The grant money will be used to support the expansion of its Amici membership and marketing campaign.

The museum recently created and approved a five-year strategic plan to expand its membership. Money will be used to produce a new membership banner, rack cards and brochures as well as creating new certificates for business sponsors.

The new initiative will be launched in November. The museum is housed in the former home of original Tontitown settlers Mary and Zelinda Bastianelli.

Greene elected

Legion head

Keith Greene of Alma has been elected commander of the American Legion Post No. 31 in Fort Smith.

Green has been a member of the American Legion for 42 years. He is a U.S. Army veteran.

Leonard named

to 30 Under 30

Jessica Leonard, communications manager for the Fayetteville Convention and Visitors Bureau, has been recognized as a Destination Marketing Association International 30 Under 30 recipient.

Leonard was nominated by the bureau's executive director Marilyn Heifner. Leonard is the only DMAI 30 Under 30 recipient in Arkansas.

She has served as communications manager for more than four years. One of her biggest accomplishments was the creation of the Fayetteville Ale Trail, a self-guided tour of seven of the Ozarks' finest breweries.

Wages receives

LeRoy Scholarship

Jeff Wages of Harrison has been named the recipient of the Jolene LeRoy Independence Scholarship by Bost Inc. in Fort Smith.

The scholarship goes to a disabled individual seeking greater independence. Wages volunteers with the local fire department warning of the dangers of smoke inhalation.

He also helps the department distribute back-to-school supplies each year, and he enjoys participating in the Special Olympics, where he has received medals for playing bocce.

Wages plans to use the scholarship to fund a trip to southern Arkansas to visit family.

Hudson to lead

hospital foundation

Tim Hudson is the new executive director of the Washington Regional Medical Foundation in Fayetteville. Hudson will be responsible for leading the hospital system's fundraising and outreach programs.

Hudson has served as director of development for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences-Northwest since 2007. Prior to that, he was executive vice president at Ozark Guidance Center.

He was founding president of the Northwest Arkansas chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and was named Outstanding Fundraising Executive by the group in 2009. He is the current president of the Fayetteville School Board.

Venkatesh is

a top scholar

Viswanath Venkatesh, a distinguished professor at the University of Arkansas, has again been recognized among the most highly cited scholars in business research. Venkatesh is the George and Boyce Billingsley chair in information systems in the Sam M. Walton College of Business.

Venkatesh has studied the diffusion of technologies for more than two decades. His current research focuses on uses of technology to help the poor in remote Indian villages.

He is among the 95 researchers included in the business and economics category in the list "Highly Cited Researchers 2014," compiled by Thompson-Reuters. To be included, researchers must rank among the top one percent most cited in their fields for papers published between 2000 and 2012.

Venkatesh has been at UA since June 2004. Prior to coming to Arkansas, he was a faculty member at the University of Maryland.

Restrepo's book

wins Latin award

El Estado impostor: Apropiaciones literarias y culturales de la memoria muisca y de la América indígena, a recent book by University of Arkansas professor Luis Restrepo, received the Premio Roggiano de la critica Literaria Latinoamericana award from the International Institute of Latin American Literature.

The award honors the best Latin American literary criticism book published in 2012 or 2013 and is named after well-known Argentinian critic Alfredo Roggiano. Restrepo's book examines the literary and artistic representations of the conquest of the land now known as Colombia.

Restrepo is a professor of Spanish, Latin American and Latino studies, comparative literature and cultural studies. He joined the UA faculty in 1995.

Run to honor

late FHS athlete

A running event to honor former Fayetteville High School all-state athlete and honor student Solomon Simpson is planned at 7 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Fayetteville High School track.

Foxy's Twilight Run for Solomon will include an elite 5K, a 5K race and a 5K run/walk. Proceeds will go to the Celebrating Solomon Scholarship, which will be awarded annually to a Fayetteville High senior to exhibits a love for sports, the arts and the human spirit.
