LR man sought in fatal shooting

Little Rock police are looking for a man who they said fatally shot another man Saturday.

Steven Hayes, 27, of 3308 Holt St. is wanted on first-degree murder, first-degree battery and possession of a firearm by certain persons warrants. Hayes is described as a 5-foot-5, 155-pound black man.

About 6:30 p.m. Saturday, officers were called to 3224 Elam St. According to police, Hayes took out a handgun during a disturbance and fatally shot Shoncoven Smith, 22, of Little Rock.

Smith was taken to Baptist Health Medical Center-Little Rock, where he died nearly an hour later, Pulaski County Coroner Gerone Hobbs said. His body was taken to the state Crime Laboratory for an autopsy, he said.

Hayes also fired shots several times at a person who was trying to run away, police said. He struck that person several times.

Police have not identified the second victim, who was taken to a local hospital after the shooting, and didn’t disclose his medical condition Sunday.

Further details about the homicide were unavailable Sunday evening.

The homicide marked the city’s fifth this year, up from one at the same time last year.
