Training center takes on child abuse

Coach reports on recruits

Walton Arts Center patrons joined the center Feb. 1 to launch Art of Wine 2014 with Una Serata tra le Stelle (An evening between the stars). The multicourse Italian wine dinner began with the first course at Pigmint just off the Fayetteville square and moved across the street toVetro 1925 for the rest of the meal.

Those launching the wine festival included Bridget and Jim Moisson, Marcia Harris and Angelo Amabile, Hannahand Greg Lee, Becky and Bob Alexander, Ann and Jim McKinzie, Lindsey and Brock Gearhart, Mary Ann and Reed Greenwood, Sara Lilygren and Alex May, Kristin and Rich Kley and Lori and Steve Collins.

More than 500 Razorback fans packed the Fayetteville Town Center on Feb. 5 for Signing Day on the Hill. Pride and optimism were evident from University of Arkansas Razorback football coach Bret Bielema as he told us about each of the 24 players that are now committed to the Razorbacks for next year. “We’re headed in the right direction. I know where we’re going because we’re getting the right type of players.”

Proceeds from the benefit hosted by the George Billingsley Northwest Arkansas Razorback Club will help support Razorback Foundation athletic scholarships.

Those rooting for the new Razorbacks included Steve Jacoby, Doyle Groff, Nick Nabholz, Richard Knipple, Toni and Chris Bahn, Gen and Frank Broyles, Fanny and Jeff Long, Cyndy and Ken Hatfield, Dash Goff and Eddie Bradford.

Child protection professionals and students now have an incredible resource available to them. The Melba Shewmaker Southern Region National Child Protection Training Center on the NorthWest Arkansas Community College campus in Bentonville celebrated its grand opening Feb. 6.

The training center is the second of only four such centers in the nation and serves 16 states, training mandated reporters, teachers, social workers, law enforcement officers, health professionals and members of judicial and childcare systems to recognize, report and respond to child abuse.

The former Highlands Oncology Group building has been transformed for the center to include a mock two-story house, mock courtroom, practice medical exam and child forensic interview rooms.

Victor Vieth, executive director of the Gunderson National Child Protection Training Center at Winona State University, told us the center will provide “a front row seat to the beginning of the end of child abuse.”

Among those celebrating the training center were Melba Shewmaker, Dayle and Dan Shewmaker, Shari and Lamar Steiger, Amy Benincosa, Ric Clifford, Evelyn Jorgenson, Becky Paneitz, Jill Wager, Dennis Smiley, Joe Spivey, Geovanny Sarmiento, Dick Trammel, Mike Lutttell, Ed Clifford, Janet Hendren and Jerry Vest.
