STAFF PHOTO ANDY SHUPE Payton Stumbaugh of Springdale Har-Ber comes in to win a heat of the 200 meters during the Class 5A-7A State Indoor Track Championship Saturday at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville.

— Absence made Payton Stumbaugh compete that much harder.

The Springdale Har-Ber senior standout, who missed the Class 5A-7A State Indoor Track Championship last year because of an injury, made up for it Saturday with two meet records and four first-place finishes at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

Stumbaugh, who signed a national letter of intent Wednesday with Oklahoma, ran the girls 60-meter hurdles in 8.85 seconds and broke the previous record of 9.10 set by Bryant’s Alexis Royal in 2012. She added to that later when she broke the 200 record with her time of 24.53 seconds, as well as won the 60 (7.73) and the high jump (17 feet, 1 inches).

“The absence was definitely my motivation,” Stumbaugh said. “I didn’t get to run the times that I wanted last year, and I know I could have won state titles, so it was my motivation to come back strong to this meet and win some state titles.

“It feels like an accomplishment after my injury last year. The 200 stands out more right because I ran a personal record, and I’m fifth in the nation right now. I did it without spikes, so that’s pretty awesome.”

Stumbaugh even ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay team, joining Elise Reina, Amanda Dillion and Jenna Birkes, as Har-Ber won nine of the 14 events, but that wasn’t enough to keep Bentonville from the top spot. The Lady Tigers turned to their depth and won the team title for the fifth time in six years, compiling 167.75 points to the Lady Wildcats’ 136.25.

Bentonville had only two first-place finishes, McKenzie Dixon in the triple jump (36-11.75) and the 4x800 relay team of Rebecca Solis, Katie Kotoucek, Sophie Quandt and Victoria Mitchell (9:56). The Lady Tigers piled up points by having two and sometimes three people place in every individual event.

“I knew it would be a real challenge to beat a team like Har-Ber because they’re very good,” Bentonville coach Randy Ramaker said. “They have great athletes, and Fayetteville has some great athletes.

“For us, it becomes a situation where we have to get our team good enough to take some other points, and that’s what we did. I just wasn’t sure where we would get them from. We don’t have the stars like the other teams have; we just put them together and do the best we can.”

Bentonville made it a sweep of the team title, but the boys division proved to be much closer. The Tigers finished with 124 points, followed by Har-Ber with 114, Rogers High with 96 and defending champion Rogers Heritage with 90.

Bentonville made the most of the latter events in order to catch and surpass Har-Ber, which led for the most of the meet. Keson Payton started the comeback when he won the triple jump on his last attempt, turning in a leap of 44-2.25.

Jacob Shiohira then won the 3,200 with a record time of 9:27.12, while teammates Cameron Hill and Joshua Kruse finished fifth and seventh, respectively. Bentonville then secured the title when the team of Hunter Smithpeters, Jose Ramirez, Tyrone Mahone and Tom Watson won the 4x400 relay.

“Jacob wanted to go out and do something special,” Bentonville coach Mike Power said. “This was his first event of the season, and I think he wanted to do it not just for himself, but for the whole team.

“We knew we would have a strong finish in the final few events We scored three in the triple jump, three in the 3,200 and won the 4x400. That was our strength, the quality at the end of the meet.”

Area teams will turn their focus now toward the outdoor season, which starts March 6 with the Panther Relays in Siloam Springs.
