RAIDERS QB returns, limited

ALAMEDA, Calif. - Terrelle Pryor returned to the practice field for the Oakland Raiders three days after sustaining a concussion but is not participating in team drills.

Pryor was in uniform Thursday and took part in stretching but did not have a helmet and mostly watched backup quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Matt McGloin run practice during the portion open to the media.

Pryor was knocked out of Monday night’s loss in Denver in the fourth quarter and did not practice Wednesday. Pryor has said it would be difficult to start Sunday’s game against Washington if he did not practice Thursday.

Injuries slow defenders

DAVIE, Fla. - Defensive end Cameron Wake and defensive tackle Paul Soliai are taking part in practice on a limited basis despite nursing injuries, and they might be able to play Monday at New Orleans.

Wake left Sunday’s victory over Atlanta because of a left knee injury, and Soliai sat out with a knee injury.

Cornerback Dimitri Patterson (groin) missed practice Thursday.

Safety Chris Clemons (hamstring and quad) and linebackers Dannell Ellerbe (ribs) and Koa Misi (shoulder) were limited.

JETS Holmes still has it

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Santonio Holmes insists he’s not completely healthy yet, and his surgically repaired left foot still hurts every day.

The New York Jets wide receiver has shown he still has plenty left, putting up a career-high 154 yards receiving Sunday against Buffalo - including the go-ahead 69-yard touchdown - and re-establishing himself as an important piece of the offense.

While Holmes rehabilitated from the injury that sidelined him most of last season and put his career in jeopardy, Coach Rex Ryan repeatedly said he hoped he’d play at some point this season. Ryan said Holmes is a “legitimate No. 1 receiver.”

Holmes has 9 catches for 218 yards through 3 games.

“I have to attack it as if I’m going to continue being a starter and a playmaker for this team,” Holmes said. “I have to continue to stay healthy and, with God’s will, if I can stay healthy throughout the season, who knows what’s going to be in store from this point on forward ?”STEELERS Takeaways needed

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Steelers created 20 turnovers in 2012. The pace has slowed considerably in 2013.

The Steelers (0-3) are the only team in the NFL not to create at least one turnover through the season’s first three weeks. Still, defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau doesn’t believe the team is pressing.

LeBeau said Thursday the defense needs to help the offense by getting the ball in good field position. Pittsburgh’s turnover margin of minus-9 is tied with the winless New York Giants for the worst in the league.

The Steelers will try to avoid their first 0-4 start since 1986 on Sunday against Minnesota (0-3) in London.

SAINTS Ingram content

METAIRIE, La. - Running back Mark Ingram said he’s “happy” to be part of the 3-0 Saints, even if the running game has struggled and his role has diminished because of an injured toe.

Ingram denies a CBSSports.

com report that he could request a trade, saying Thursday that the information in the report “never” came from him.

After playing two games and missing a third, Ingram is averaging just 1.8 yards per carry.

Ingram said the only opinions he cares about are those of Saints personnel.

“I come out every day, work my butt off to be the best person I can be, the best player I can be for this team to help us go out there and have success,” Ingram said. “I do that every single day. As long as my teammates, my coaches and everybody in this organization knows that, that’s all that matters to me.”

The former Heisman Trophy winner and 2011 first-round draft choice said he’s looking forward to returning to the field as soon as possible with New Orleans, which hosts Miami on Monday night.

LIONS Missing Burleson

ALLEN PARK, Mich. - Calvin Johnson is trying to stay positive after Nate Burleson’s injury.

Burleson was coming off a big game last weekend at Washington, but he broke his arm in a car crash early Tuesday, so now the Lions will have to rely on Johnson and a number of less proven options at wide receiver.

That didn’t work out well last season, when Burleson hurt his leg and the Lions slumped to a 4-12 finish.

Burleson’s absence didn’t hurt Johnson’s stats last season. He finished with 122 catches for a record 1,964 yards, but Detroit’s offense could have used more balance.

Coach Jim Schwartz didn’t put any timetable on Burleson’s return from an injury that required surgery.

“Every person heals at a different rate. Each position’s a little bit different,” Schwartz said Thursday.

“All indications, it’s gone well as far as the surgery goes, but it’s not just the surgery. It’s the rehab, how his body reacts and things like that.

Like I said, he’ll be back. How long it takes, we really don’t know.”REDSKINS Defense struggling

ASHBURN, Va. - It’s been more than a half-century since an NFL team was as easy to move the ball against as the 2013 Washington Redskins.

Lineman Kedric Golston said his defense is off to “a terrible start.”

Washington has allowed 1,464 total yards heading into Sunday’s game at Oakland. That is the most a team has allowed through its first three games of a season since the 1951 New York Yanks gave up 1,494, according to STATS LLC.

The Redskins also rank last this season in yards after catch, opponent’s quarterback rating and plays of 20-plus yards. They are 30th against the pass and tied for 30th against the run, and they are 29th in average yards allowed on first down.

“We know we can be better, ” linebacker Brian Orakpo said, “and we know what we’re capable of.”
