Architect to receive

achievement award

World Services for the Blind Foundation said Monday that it will give Reese Rowland, a principal architect with Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects in Little Rock, the 13th annual Vision Award.

The award will be presented at an Oct. 23 luncheon at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Little Rock. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m.

The Vision Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated far-reaching vision in orchestrating events through business enterprise and community involvement.

Rowland has designed some of Little Rock’s most recognizable buildings, including Heifer International’s world headquarters.

Worker sues Entergy in turbine accident

Jess Clayton, a worker who was injured in a March 31 accident at Arkansas Nuclear One near Russellville, filed a lawsuit last week against Entergy Arkansas and other contractors involved in the accident, claiming the defendants were negligent in moving a 1 million-pound turbine part.

The lawsuit was filed in Pope County Circuit Court.

In addition to Entergy Arkansas, defendants include Bigge Group Inc. of San Leandro, Calif., and two of its subsidiaries, which provided the equipment to remove the 525-ton main turbine generator stator; Orlando, Fla.-based Siemens Energy Inc., hired to plan and execute the removal of the stator; DP Engineering of Fort Worth;VEI General Contractors Inc.; and three unidentified defendants.

The generator stator fell and killed Wade Walters, 24, and injured eight others.

Clayton, a resident of Ozark County, Mo., was working for a subcontractor.

Arkansas Index falls 1.42, ends at 299.51

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, fell 1.42 to 299.51 Monday.

Nine stocks advanced and eight declined.

USA Truck had the best day, rising 2.2 percent in heavy trading.

P.A.M. Transportation Services closed at its 52-week high on three times its average volume.

Simmons First National reached its 52-week high during the day in heavy trading.

Volume for the index was 16.5 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
