State to delay signup for teacher insurance

Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe says the state is delaying signup for teachers' health insurance by a month as he and lawmakers look at a possible solution to alleviate premium increases that are to take effect next year.

Beebe says open enrollment for teacher insurance plans will be delayed from Oct. 1 to Nov. 1 as he considers calling a special session to look at a short-term infusion of money to the insurance program, along with long-term reforms that would help avoid similar hikes in the future.

Beebe announced the delay after meeting with groups of superintendents and lawmakers. Beebe said lawmakers are looking at options that include increased funding and changes to the insurance benefits.

Beebe said it's too early to say whether he will call for a special session.
