BASKETBALL Grizzlies caravan to hit Little Rock

The Memphis Grizzlies regional caravan tour will make a stop in Little Rock from 4-6 p.m. Friday at the Big Dam Bridge 100 Expo at the Statehouse Convention Center.

Grizzlies guard Quincy Pondexter, team mascot Grizz, members of the Grizz Girls and the Claw Crew will all participate in the stop. Admission is free for fans to attend. Fans will have the opportunity to get autographs, photos and participate in contests and games with the team’s personalities. Hendrix names interim coach

Hendrix College men’s assistant Drew Gaeng has been named the interim head women’s coach for the 2013-2014 season. Gaeng replaces Emily Cummins who resigned last week after three years with the Lady Warriors.

Gaeng has served as the Warriors’ men’s assistant for the past four seasons. During that time he has helped coached seven all-conference selections.

The Lady Warriors return seven players from last season and added eight freshmen for 2013-2014. Hendrix opens its season Nov. 16 against Rust College in Memphis.

GOLF Arkansas team wins cup qualifier

We Rock 2, a women’s golf team from Arkansas won the Executive Women’s Golf Association’s Central Midwest Regional Cup Qualifier held last weekend at Squaw Valley Golf Course in Glen Rose, Texas.

The Little Rock ‘N Rollers finished seventh in the 12-team competition.

We Rock 2 won with 9 points, including 3 1/2 in four-ball matches, then came away with 51/2 points in singles matches to win the regional.

The teams of Natalie Gay-Stephanie Hopkins, Jessalyn Johnson-Christy Mahan and Trisha Cooper-Cherie Cox won their four-ball matches, while the Valerie Little-Jeanne Miller team halved its.

Singles winners included Gay, Johnson, Mahan, Cox and Little, while Cooper halved her match.

We Rock 2 qualified for the EWGA Championship to be held Oct. 19 and 20 at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

FIELD HOCKEY Hendrix falls at home

Hendrix College(0-5, 0-3) lost 9-1 to Rhodes College at Warrior Field in Conway on Saturday afternoon.

The visiting Lynx (2-5, 2-1 Southern Athletic Association) out shot the Warriors 43-6 overall and 35-4 in shots on goal.

Hendrix junior forward Morgan Fires scored in the 52nd minute on an assist from junior defender Lauren Shklanko for the Warriors’ only goal.

VOLLEYBALL UCA downs Incarnate Word

Central Arkansas hit .426 for the match and downed Incarnate Word 3-0 on Saturday at the Prince Center in Conway.

The Bears (10-3, 2-0 Southland Conference) won the first set 25-12 before taking the second set 25-23. The Sugar Bears won the third 25-7 to finish off the victory. Fulani Petties led Central Arkansas, picking up 10 kills, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 dig. Kyle Hartman chipped in 10 kills, while Marissa Collins keyed the Sugar Bears offense with 37 assists.

Shaina Garza led the way for the Cardinals (4-4, 0-2 SLC), with six kills. UALR sweeps La Salle

UALR (8-4) took out La Salle (1-15) in consecutive sets - 25-15, 25-10, 25-12 - Saturday at the Tiger Invitational in Memphis.

Junior Edina Begic was the tournament’s MVP, finishing with 17 kills and 3 errors on 34 swings for a .412 hitting percentage. Sophomore Sonja Milanovic was also named to the all-tournament team, recording 8 kills and 1 error on 12 swings for a .583 hitting percentage against La Salle.

UAM beats Victory, falls to Union

Arkansas-Monticello split two matches on Saturday in the Union University Tri-Match in Jackson, Tenn., falling to host Union 3-1 before defeating Victory University 3-0.

UAM (5-7) lost to Union 14-25, 17-25, 25-20 and 22-25 and defeated Victory 25-21, 25-12 and 25-16.

In the victory, UAM’s third sweep of the season, the Blossoms were led by senior Tori Bozzo who matched her season-high in kills with 13. Junior Jessica Cuba added 7 kills and 9 digs, while also tallying 4 service aces.

UAFS goes 1-1

Washburn (Kan.) University defeated Arkansas-Fort Smith 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 on Saturday in the final match of the two-day, six-team Mary Beth Sudduth Invitational at Stubblefield Center in Fort Smith.

Senior Jordan Erz led UAFS (5-5) with 8 kills and was 1 of 3 Lady Lions with 6 or more kills. Freshman Maja Krstonosic had 18 assists and freshman Emily Tripp had 28 digs.

The Lady Lions’ match earlier Saturday against Dallas Baptist was part of the invitational but also served as a Heartland Conference match for both teams.

UAFS rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat the Lady Patriots and remain undefeated in conference play. The Lady Lions won the match 26-24, 22-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-11.

JBU sweeps St. Gregory’s

John Brown University relied on a strong hitting performance to sweep St. Gregory’s (Okla.) 25-12, 25-8, 25-19 Saturday at Bill George Arena in Siloam Springs.

JBU (6-12, 1-1 Sooner Athletic Conference) finished with a season-high .367 hitting percentage, behind strong attacking performances from junior Courtney Marshall, sophomores Melissa Bakke and Audrey Dearien and freshman Molli Pugh. The four combined for a .424 hitting percentage as Marshall led the Golden Eagles offense with nine kills.

CROSS COUNTRY Razorbacks perfect in San Diego

No. 10 Arkansas took the first eight spots to record the team’s third perfect score of 15 points on the season and win the 69th Aztec Cross Country Invitational on Saturday in San Diego.

Sophomore Dominique Scott crossed the finish line first at 17:33. Juniors Grace Heymsfield and Shannon Klenke came in at 17:34 and 17:38, respectively. Freshman Sandie Raines was fourth in 17:42, just in front of Diane Robinson who crossed at 17:54 to complete the Razorbacks perfect score with a fifth-place finish.

No. 5 Hogs second in Joplin

Junior Stanley Kebenei won for the second time, leading the fifth-ranked Arkansas men’s cross country team to a second-place finish at the Southern Stampede Cross Country Invitational on Saturday in Joplin, Mo.

Kebenei won in 23:52.75. Senior Raymond Joseph was second, coming in at 24:20.86. Arkansas had two more top-10 finishers: sophomore Cale Wallace who finished in 25:16.65 and freshman Aidan Swain with a 25:40.62 time to place ninth.

Oklahoma edged Arkansas 31-32 in the final standings.
