Culmination of creation

‘Sensory Iconoclasts’ comes to fruition

Artists and chefs mingled during a reception for “Sensory Iconoclasts” Sept. 12 at the Arts Center of the Ozarks in Springdale.

On show through Oct. 4, the “Sensory Iconoclasts” project paired artists and chefs together, fueling reciprocated inspiration to create a singular experience, Eve Smith, visual arts director at ACO, said.

The idea was born last fall when Smith and Case Dighero, culinary director for Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, teamed up to create food and a painting in support of ACO’s annual 5x5 Soiree.

Smith and Dighero curated the exhibit. The other pairs included Matt McClure, chef at The Hive at 21c Museum Hotel, and sculptor Serkan Ozkaya; Kat Wilson, artist who does installation, photography, video and performance art, and Emily Lawson, chef at The Depot in Fayetteville; Tammy Varney, chef at Meridienne in Bentonville, and designer Garrett Hunt; sculptor Mike Davis and David Lewis, chef at BHK Kafe in Fayetteville;

fiber artist Autumn Brown and Bill Lyle, executive chefof Ella’s Restaurant at the Inn at Carnall Hall in Fayetteville; actor/artist Jason Suel and Darwin Beyer, chef at Meiji in Fayetteville; Jerrmy Gawthrop, chef at Greenhouse Grille in Fayetteville, and Bryan Hembree, artist in 3 Penny Acre; Sara Segerlin, artist who does multidisciplinary art/video art, and Paula Jo Chitty Henry, chef at Crepes Paulette in Bentonville; and KJ Zumwalt, chef at Caribe in Eureka Springs, and performance poet Houston Hughes.

Food inspired by the collaborations has been on the menu at participating restaurants.

For the reception, chefs brought their dishes to the Arts Center of the Ozarks for guests to try, and the artists’ works were displayed throughout the first floor.

Smith said they will be putting on another exhibition next year.

“This exhibition has been such an inspiring journey forme, both as an artist and a curator,” Smith said in a Sept. 19 email. “I’m excited to see how Case and I will further this idea of breaking up the standard molds of the culinary and visual arts worlds in next year’s exhibition.”

“‘Sensory Iconoclasts’ has been a complete surprise for everyone involved; Eve and I started with an idea, then the entire collaborative team evolved it into something personal and meaningful,” Dighero added.
