Chill with the Hills heats up

Chefs champion garden

More than 400 guests reaped the benefits as a dozen area chefs cooked up support for the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks at the group’s annual Chefs in the Garden benefit on Sept. 12.

Cafe Rue Orleans Early Bird CateringFayetteville Country Club, Fresco Cafe and Pub, GC Catering, Greenhouse Grille, The Hive@21c Museum Hotel, Meridienne Dessert Salon, Mermaids, Starbucks, Vetro 1925and Yarnell’s Ice Cream were on hand to boost the botanical garden.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the garden’s educational programming. Some 12,000 Northwest Arkansas children benefited from the nonprofit organization’s offerings last year.

Those dining among garden delights included honorary chairwoman Kelly and Steve Zega, Nancy and Dick Trammel, Laura and Kyle Kellams, Denise Garner, Maudie Schmitt and Carla Williams, Tracey and Scott Farmer, Nickki and Todd Golden and Gaye and Jim Cypert.

Chill with the Hills heated up on Sept. 13 with some 325 Seven Hills Homeless Center supporters attending the nonprofit organization’s annual fundraiser. The night brought in an estimated $66,000 for the group that operates a day center and the Walker Family Residential Center. The day center served about 1,700 clients, and 3,900 clients participated in all the organization’s offerings last year.

Jon Woodward, Seven Hills chief executive, told me they will be extending their services to homeless veterans and their families through a short-term housing program called Supportive Services for Veteran Families.

The program will allow the center to serve an additional 100 homeless veteran families in the next year.

The casual event included a silent auction, dinner and live music from Big’Uns. A pig drop of more than 300 foam pigs with numbers corresponding to prizes rounded out the evening.

Those Chilling with the Hills included Denise and Hershey Garner, Lynn Carver, Betsy and Loyd Phillips, Butch and Roy Clinton, Karen Gray, Haley and Andrew Starks, Sarah and Patrick Curry, Darcy Woody Smith, Nancy Cozart, Terry Bankston and Fred Hiatt.

The estimated total project cost for the Vol Walker Hall renovation at the University of Arkansas was an estimated $36.6 million.

I told y’all the wrong amount last week. The number I gave you was only a portion. Mea culpa.
