The U.S. Army under Gen. James G. Blunt spearheaded a campaign to secure the Arkansas River in July 1863. Blount’s forces charged into present-day Oklahoma, pushing Choctaw troops and regiments from Texas to the Muddy Boggy Creek before making a run at Fort Smith.
The U.S. forces attacked across the Poteau River on Sept. 1, 1863, in what was known as the Battle of Devil’s Backbone. U.S. forces retained control of the fort throughout the remainder of the war.
