The life and hard times of Ned Yost

Kansas City Royals Manager Ned Yost is having an interesting week, and that’s not even considering that his team had lost 10 consecutive home games entering Wednesday night’s game against St. Louis.

After Tuesday’s 4-1 loss to the Cardinals, Yost was asked what he was going to do about making his players accountable for their 21-28 record.

“What are you asking me to do?” Yost told Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. “Take my belt off and spank them?”

The Royals started the season by winning 17 of their first 27 games before going on their tailspin.

Earlier on Tuesday, Yost, 57, was almost arrested for jogging too close to Arrowhead Stadium where the Kansas City Chiefs’ were holding a minicamp.

“They surrounded me with their security,” Yost said. “I’m not going to sell any secrets.”

NFL teams are notoriously guarded about their practice activities, and this area, unknown to Yost, happened to be off-limits.

“Hey, I just wanted to see what was going on,” Yost told the security guards. “They said, ‘Well, you can’t be here. It’s closed.’ ”

The Royals and Chiefs share the Truman Sports Complex, and Yost has been manager since 2010, but that does not mean he is automatically recognized.

Not only that, but kansascity.com reports Yost was grabbed for a random MLB drug test prior to Tuesday’s batting practice.

Yost should be thankful that he is not in line for any corporal punishment.

From Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “The Miami Heat and Indianapolis Pacers are heading to game five after splitting their first four.

Meanwhile the San Antonio Spurs can sit back, relax, and work on things like their Finals game plan and Medicare choices.”

A single man

Milwaukee Brewers rookie Jean Segura, who played for the Arkansas Travelers last season, went 6 for 7 on Tuesday night in a 6-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins. All six of Segura’s hits were singles, and it was the first six-single game in the majors since Raul Ibanez turned the trick in 2004. Only 10 players have done it since 1900.

“Oh my, goodness gracious, he hits about everything you throw up there,” Minnesota Manager Ron Gardenhire said of Segura.

“The guy’s got one of the shortest, compact swings you’ve ever seen in your life and he seems to be on everything.”
