100 YEARS AGO May 24, 1913

A permanent organization to raise funds with which to erect a memorial to David O. Dodd, Arkansas’ boy hero, was perfected yesterday afternoon at the Chamber of Commerce, at a meeting of the Daughters of the Confederacy, veterans and sons of veterans. Then followed a discussion of ways and means to raise $10,000 with which to erect an appropriate memorial to the memory of the Civil war hero. After considerable discussion it was decided that a sketch of the life of David O. Dodd be prepared and distributed to the school children of the state, and a day designated for raising the money.

50 YEARS AGO May 24, 1963

The Water Works Commission today told a group of Ozark Street property owners that it was bound by a construction contract and could not interrupt the assembly of a big 5 million gallon water tank going up in that fashionable neighborhood. Chairman Frank Lyon made that clear in reply to attorney E. DeMatt Henderson who had asked the commission if it was “irrevocably” committed to the construction of the tank. After it became clear that the property owners had gained nothing but sympathy from the commission, Henderson remarked that the commission was leaving them no alternative but to seek redress through the courts.

25 YEARS AGO May 24, 1988

PRAIRIE GROVE - A school nurse who excused three girls from school so they could obtain contraceptives from the county health clinic has resigned over the incident, she says. Pat Kisner, 35, of Summers (Washington County), said she was following state law in excusing the girls from Prairie Grove High School and in protecting their confidentiality. Superintendent Ben Winborn of the schools said the girls may have confidentiality about obtaining birth control information but were entitled to no confidentiality for being excused from school.

Higher license fees for North Little Rock businesses will stay in place to bring in needed city revenue, Mayor Patrick Hays said Friday, though any proven inequities caused by the new fee structure can be corrected. Hays and Alderman Gary Berry met for the first time with three North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce representatives Friday as part of a committee to review the cost increases for a city occupation privilege license. The license is required to run a business in North Little Rock.
