Cow Paddy Run raises $5,000

A crowd of students, families and runners attended the 2013 Cow Paddy 5K run March 9 at Fayetteville’s Gulley Park. With more than 300 participants and many local supporters, the event was able to raise more than $5,000.

The money was donated to the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation in an effort to promote physical fitness and quality education, and to bridge the gap between the two.

Participating in the presentation were Ben Putman, race director; Max Mahler, race director; Cambre Horne-Brooks, foundation executive director; and her son, Hays Brooks, a third grader at Root Elementary.

School Foundation awards 2013 grants

The Bentonville Public School Foundation awarded a total of $45,926.12 in grants to elementary, middle school, junior high and high school teachers and counselors in the Bentonville School District. A committee made up of foundation board members and a community representative evaluated 71 applications based on innovation, student engagement and the overall impact of the project proposal. The applicants names were removed from their proposals as well as the school name in order to keep the evaluation process as unbiased as possible.

Out of the 71 applications, 15 received grant awards. Projects rangingfrom filmmaking, robotics, literacy and transition skills were among those chosen.

Each year the foundation selects one grant to be the overall winner, and this year the top grant was submitted by Brenda Hemberger from RE Baker Elementary for her project titled “Biking with Special Needs Children and Biking Outdoors.”

Foundation board members ventured from classroom to classroom on April 19 and 20, surprising the teachers with their grant awards. Award amounts ranged from $829.59 to $11,682.00. The funding for the grants comes from the annual Bold for Gold campaign.

Springdale schools receive grant

Tyson Foods recently awarded $100,000 to the Springdale Public Schools Education Foundation to support the organization’s mission to provide resources that enhance educational and enrichment opportunities for Springdale public school students.

While a portion of the grant funds will be directed toward the foundation’s operating expenses, over the next two years, $70,000 will be used to fund classroom and school-wide grants that directly impact student learning such as Special Olympics, Literacy Mentor Program and Language Lab.

In 2012, SPSEF raised more than $20,000 from the district employees through its first payroll deduction campaign. These funds were subsequently disbursed through a competitive process to fund 22 innovative grants that touched thousands of students in 21 of the district’s 28 schools.
