Homer F. Berry, the selfstyled rainmaker, may not leave Arkansas after all. He said yesterday a “flood” of offers had just about caused him to change his mind. The biggest job offer was to fill Greers Ferry Reservoir with rain water before President Kennedy’s dedicatory address this fall. The state Legislature should pass a law prohibiting school officials from hiring people without education degrees to teach school, the Arkansas Education Association says. Last week, the state Board of Education approved an alternative-certification pilot program which will allow certain academically qualified people who are not certified to teach. Mary and Ellen, the Little Rock Zoo’s elephants, will get more room to roam today as their exercise yard is expanded by 10,000 square feet. The expansion also will give the Asian elephants more areas to relax in the shade, an important improvement because both Mary and Ellen are 51 yearsold and are considered geriatric elephants. “Female geriatric elephants encounter the same problems female humans do when they age, such as arthritis and osteoporosis,” said Bill Baker, curator of hoofed mammals and tropical birds at the zoo. The expanded yard will open at 11:30 a.m. today. Mayor Jim Dailey, City Manager Bruce Moore and other city leaders will be on hand for the ribbon cutting.
