Garden party goes Caribbean

Spark surpasses goal

Six seems to be a positive harbinger for Women’s Day at the LPGA, presented by the Network of Executive Women Northwest Arkansas on June 20 at the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers. The sixth annual event drew some 600 professionals for the power breakfast -quite a jump from the 60 who attended the inaugural event at the Pinnacle Country Club clubhouse.

The gathering is an official event of the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship and was hosted by Rosalind Brewer, Sam’s Club president and chief executive, and Linda Cohn, ESPN anchor, who “interviewed” each other, addressing issues such as what it’s like to be a role model and balancing various parts of life.

Cohn, when asked about her break as one of the first female sports anchors, said, “You have to make it happen. You have to put yourself in a position to be lucky.”

Brewer encouraged young professionals to find a mentor. “The best thing that can happen is when someone sees you perform and wants to help you.”

Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Northwest Arkansas hosted its 11th annual Spark of Hope dinner June 20 at Fayetteville Town Center and welcomed more than 350 guests.

Supporters at the dinner helped the scholarship organization raise more than the $30,000 needed for the group to meet its 2013 fundraising goal of $370,000. Dinner guests took the total to $381,200.

The fund awarded eight $300 scholarships when it started in 1984. In the ensuing 29 years, the nonprofit organization has awarded more than 4,800 scholarships totalling more than $3.5 million.

Spark of Hope honorees were: Helene Furst, Individual Pinnacle Foods Group, Corporate Support LiveLight!, Community Partner

Other award recipients included Patrice Whitley, Supportive Employer Award, and Barbara Stephenson, Supportive Teacher Award.

Julie and Greg Oakhill welcomed more than 600 supporters to the Friends of Washington Regional Hospice 22nd annual Garden Party on June 22 at their east Fayetteville home. The Caribbean Nightsthemed benefit included island-inspired fare, live steel drum entertainment from Lazell Williams and a spirited live auction that included a barbecue party for six with Razorback football, basketball and baseball head coaches and their wives.

Those gathering in the garden for hospice included Gen and Frank Broyles, Nancy and Jim Blair, Laura and Craig Underwood, Melanie and Thad Beck, Jeanne Cole, Marcheita and Mike Anderson, Jen and Bret Bielema and Karen and Dave Van Horn.
