Additional returns from Saturday’s gubernatorial primary, which staggered into the Gazette office over a crippled wire service yesterday, slightly increased Judge George W. Hays’ lead over Stephen Brundidge. Six counties have given absolutely no returns and the Brundidge men claim these missing counties will give the former congressman a final majority of no less than 2,500 over Judge Hays. The Hays men, on the other hand, are just as confident and declare their present lead will be 15,000 when all the returns are in.50 YEARS AGO June 23, 1963

Officials at MacArthur Park still haven’t given up on locating the legendary underground tunnels at the park grounds, despite the fact than an auger drill worked all day Friday, probing down as far as 18 feet without striking anything solid. Ellis Doyle Herron, director of the Natural History Museum, appeared confident before the drilling started that the tunnels would be found. So did Julus Breckling, director of the city’s parks and recreational facilities. But after drilling in at least six spots, without results, the search was called off indefinitely. Legend has it that when the site was a military arsenalback in the days before the Civil War, several underground passageways connected various buildings on the compound for safe night passage.

Arnold of Little Rock. In remanding the case and ordering relief to the organization, the three-judge panel at St. Louis ruled funds were denied to the Gay and Lesbian Student Association “because of disagreementwith the GLSA’s speech.” 10 YEARS AGO June 23, 2003
