Cardinals slip past Travelers in ninth

Cody Stanley’s line drive skipped off second baseman Taylro Lindsey’s glove, fell into shallow right field and Chris Swauger scored to give the Springfield Cardinals a 5-4 victory over the Arkansas Travelers on Friday night at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo.

Stanley’s line drive capped an eventful ninth inning. Ruben Gotay led off with a double off reliever Kevin Johnson, then was thrown out trying to advance to third base on Swauger’s ground ball to Lindsey. Springfield Manager Mike Shildt was ejected by third base umpire Ramon Hernandez for arguing the call.

That was followed by a wild pitch from Johnson that allowed Swauger to move to second, an intentional walk to Xavier Scruggs and finally Stanley’s single.

Stanley hit his second home run of the season to lead off the second inning, the Cardinals’ third home run off Travs starter Matt Oye in thefirst six batters of the game to take a 3-0 lead. James Ramsey led off the first with a home run and Swauger hit a home run three batters later.

Luis Montanez helped the Travs tie the game in the third, when Rolando Gomez scored on a passed ball while he was batting, then his single scored Travis Witherspoon and Lindsey to tie the game at 3-3. Montanez, who went 4 for 5 with a home run in his first game with the Travs on Thursday, added an RBI double in the sixth to give the Travs a 4-3 lead.
