UPDATE: Vue fuel spill smaller than first thought

2:56 p.m. update Katherine Benenati, public outreach and assistance chief for the Arkansas Department of Environmental Equality, estimated the spill to be 100 to 200 gallons.

Emergency crews are trying to contain and clean up hundreds of gallons of diesel that spilled this morning at The Vue apartment complex in Fayetteville, said Mauro Campos, a battalion chief for the Fayetteville Fire Department. Workers were moving a fuel tank when it struck the ground, ripping off a valve, Campos said.

Campos said the fuel drained down a hillside toward the railroad, and had not reached any water that he was aware of. He said there were no injuries and no evacuations.

The constructions site has been the scene of two deaths this year. A Joplin man was electrocuted earlier this month when his boom lift hit a power line. A Springdale man was killed in May when a dirt pit collapsed on him.
