Backpack Course

Backpacker Scott Branyan of Rogers will teach a three-hour beginner backpacking clinic at 1 p.m. on June 30 at the Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area visitor center.

Branyan will discuss equipment, food, cooking, getting in shape, planning and emergencies. Students should bring a notebook and pen.

The class is limited to 15 students. Cost is $35 plus tax.

Kayak Clinic Covers Basics

A free seminar on the basics of kayaking will be taught by Olympic kayaker Mike Herbert of Rogers at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Prairie Creek park.

There is no fee orregistration. The seminar will be on the beach beside the sand volleyball court, near the public fishing dock. Herbert will demonstrate proper paddle grip, efficient paddling form, turning and other basics. A one-hour group paddling trip will take place after Herbert’s talk. Life jackets are required.

Herbert will be on the water to offer paddling tips and help to all who ask.

After the trip, Herbert willhave the kayak he paddled in three Olympics available for people to try.

The Army Corps of Engineers will waive the park day-use fee for all who attend the seminar.
