Teachers’ retirement board gets new trustee

A Fort Smith P u blic Schools official will replace a Rogers Public Schools official on the board of trustees for the Arkansas Teacher Retirement System, starting Sept. 1.

The system’s trustees appointed Kelly Davis, supervisor of payroll and employee benefits for Fort Smith Public Schools, to replace trustee David Cauldwell, business manager for Rogers Public Schools, said system Executive Director George Hopkins.

Davis’ term on the 15-member board will run until June 30, 2015, according to Hopkins.

Cauldwell, who served about four years, told the trustees in a letter that he’s retiring from his job with Rogers Public Schools effective Aug. 31, which will make him ineligible to continue serving on the system’s board.

The trustees Friday unanimously appointed Davis.

Davis wrote in her application to the board that it would be a privilege and honor to serve on the system’s board.

She said she coordinates a payroll exceeding $110 million in salaries and benefits to more than 1,800 employees in her current job, holds a master’s degree in business administration, and has 20 years of experience working in small and large school districts.

Also Friday, the trustees unanimously elected Trustee Richard Abernathy of Little Rock as board chairman and Trustee Jeff Stubblefield of Charleston as vice chairman - both through June 30, 2015 - according to Hopkins.

Abernathy has been the board’s chairman since Oct. 30, 2008, Hopkins said. Abernathy is the executive director of the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators. Stubblefield is the superintendent of Charleston Public Schools.
