100 YEARS AGO July 31, 1913

Repeatedly disturbed, they allege by non-believers in their creed, members of the “Apostolic Faith,” or Holy Rollers, at Benton, yesterday through letters and through a personal visit to Acting Governor Futrell, sought the aid of the chief executive that they may pursue their religious belief. The letters charged that on several occasions persons threw stones at the worshipers and at other times, by yells of derision, practically caused a cessation of services. As a result of the appeal the governor yesterday instructed Prosecuting Attorney Utley of Saline County, as well as the sheriff of the county, to investigate the charges.

50 YEARS AGO July 31, 1963

PINE BLUFF - A group, calling itself the Women’s Committee for Racial Integrity and Perpetuation of Our White Schools and Our Civilization, has asked Pine Bluff residents to sign statements of protest against the desegregation of the Pine Bluff schools in September. Numerous Pine Bluff residents reported receiving letters containing the statement to be signed. Efforts to identify leaders of the group were unsuccessful. The school board announced last week that six Negro children had been registered for the first and second grades under a voluntary desegregation plan recently made public. The petition is the first protest in evidence since the announcement.

25 YEARS AGO July 31, 1988

Little Rock police feel “an understanding” has been reached with teenagers who cruise Geyer Springs Road. Only two juveniles were arrested Friday and traffic on the strip was light. In contrast, police rounded up 67 juveniles and 16 adults July 22 on Geyer Springs Road on a variety of mostly misdemeanor charges, primarily consisting of criminal trespassing on parking lots. “I think we’ve got an understanding with these kids that if they keep rollin’ they’ll stay out of trouble,” Sgt. Tom Bartsch of motorcycle patrol said.

Tiny Wiederkehr Village in the Ozarks’ wine country Tuesday became the second town in Arkansas to legalize Sunday liquor sales in businesses other than hotels and restaurants. Voters in the incorporated town of 46 people, home of two wineries, approved the liquor sales in a municipal election in which only 14 people voted. The complete but unofficial results were: For: 10.
