$16.6 million bid wins I-540 project

Another section of Interstate 540 in Washington County will be widened under a $16.6 million contract the state Highway Commission awarded Wednesday.

The project was one of 54 contracts awarded, worth $45.1 million. The contracts aren’t final until state highway officials review them for accuracy.

The I-540 project will widen a 1.3-mile section between Wedington Road, also called Arkansas 16, and Porter Road to three lanes in both directions.

Pace Construction Co. LLC of St. Louis submitted the lowest of the four bids opened Wednesday. The others ranged from $16.7 million to $19.9 million.

The project is the latest in a series to help ease congestion in the heavily traveled corridor. Up to 72,000 vehicles per day drive on that section of I-540, according to the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department.

Other significant projects on which contracts were awarded, including the low bid amount and the low bidder:

Resurface 12.9 miles of Interstate 30 north of Prescott in Nevada and Clark counties, $2.9 million, Martin Marietta Materials Inc. of Hot Springs.

Resurface 2.56 miles of I-30 in Little Rock, $1.17 million, Martin Marietta Materials Inc. of Hot Springs.
