Nature center to host teachers’ workshops

The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center in Fort Smith will host two workshops for teachers in late July.

From 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, the center will host a Project WILD workshop for teachers who are interested in learning about wildlife education. The program was developed for use at any grade level and complies with recommendations by the National Council for the Social Studies and the National Science Teachers Association.

Teachers will be given lesson plans, suggested activities, information about Arkansas’s wildlife resources and posters of Arkansas wildlife. Educators can also receive six hours of Arkansas Department of Education professional development credit by attending.

Educators can also participate in a bird investigations workshop from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday at the nature center.

The workshop will focus on three main groups of birds found in Arkansas - waterfowl, song birds and birds of prey.

Teachers will learn the basics about birds as well as investigative techniques to use in the classroom. The workshop also carries six hours of professional development credit.

Both workshops are free, but registration is required.

More information is available by calling (479) 452-3993.
