Fly facts

Using insecticides to control horsefly populations poses environmental hazards.

The flies lay eggs on plants and objects near water. The environment could be harmed by the amount of chemical needed to spray these areas enough to wipe out the horseflies.

Horseflies don’t deposit eggs in piles of manure; the flies that emerge from manure piles are a different insect.

Many species of horsefly are most active at dawn and dusk, but activity varies by species. They are drawn to bright lights.

Sticky traps use odor and/ or color to attract houseflies and stable flies. Sticky traps may catch a few horseflies, but a box or pyramid trap will collect dozens.
