Carpenter slips to 52nd place

Alex Carpenter of Little Rock shot a 2-over-par 74 on Friday and sits in a tie for 52nd place at 1 over after the third round of the Southern Amateur Championship at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas.

Carpenter began Friday in a tie for 39th place at 1 under and started the round on No. 10 with birdies on two of his first three holes. A double bogey on the 16th took him to even, but bogeys at 4 and 6 left him at 2 over. A birdie at the par-5 8th left him at 1 over.

Carpenter will tee off at 8:20 a.m. today in the final round. Zachary Olsen of Cordova, Tenn., leads the tournament at 11 under.

BASKETBALL Peterson to play in Sweden

Former Arkansas State forward Brandon Peterson has signed to play professionally in Sweden. Peterson, who was a second-team all-Sun Belt Conference pick last year, will play for the KFUM Jamtland Baskets of Ostersund in the Basketligan League, considered Sweden’s top league.

Peterson will leave for Sweden in late August, and KFUM Jamtland’s season will begin Oct. 5.

“My four-year experience at Arkansas State was the best with my teammates and coaches,” Peterson said in a statement. “It has prepared me for this moment and I’m looking forward to a long professional basketball career.”

Peterson averaged 10.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game as a senior, leading ASU to a Sun Belt West Division title before losing in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Tournament. In his career, he finished with 1,098 points, 886 rebounds and 163 blocks.
