City to Provide Weatherization Kits

— The city’s Community Services Division is giving away weatherization kits that could help qualified homeowners save money on their monthly utility bills.

The kits include compact fluorescent light bulbs, water- and energy-saving shower heads and faucets, window and door insulation materials and refrigerator and wall-plate thermometers, according to a news release.

The kits were purchased through the city’s Community Development Block Grant program, a federally funded initiative that pays for an array of services, including home repairs for low-income residents.

Kyle Belt, redevelopment officer for the Community Services Division, said a one-person household must earn less than $31,750 to qualify for a weatherization kit. According to federal guidelines, a two-person household must earn less than $36,300. Three-, four- and five-person households must earn less than $40,850, $45,350 and $49,000, respectively.

According to Paul Becker, Fayetteville finance director, the 1,500 kits cost $55,000. The city received $540,226 in Community Development Block Grant money in fiscal 2012, Becker said.

To apply for a weatherization kit, go to the city’s Community Services Division at 125 W. Mountain St., or call 479-575-8260.
