State likely to see only slight snow, sleet

A weather system cutting across Arkansas today threatens to drop snow in the northern part of the state later tonight and cause some severe weather in the southern quarter of Arkansas this afternoon.

John Robinson, the National Weather Service’s warning-coordinating meteorologist in North Little Rock, said cold rains and thunderstorms will move into Arkansas around dawn and rain could continue through Tuesday.

Expected to dump much snow in Oklahoma and Missouri, the front could result in anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of snow in parts of Northwest Arkansas once temperatures drop tonight.

Robinson said that the rest of the state shouldn’t be surprised to see a little sleet mix in with the rain.

Southern parts of the state have an “outside chance” of seeing large hail or damaging winds, according to Robinson, but such conditions are more likely to happen in Louisiana.

Robinson said the system will stop for a few hours tonight, only to start again three to six hours later, and continue through Tuesday morning for most of the state and Tuesday afternoon for northwest parts of the state.

The rain is expected to fall between half an inch and 11/4 inches over its duration, Robinson said.
