Civil War marker

The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission has approved the placement of a historical marker at the Pike County Courthouse in Murfreesboro, commission Chairman Tom Dupree said.

The marker will commemorate the Royston Factory Mill and Confederate engineer Henry Merrell.

The Pike County Archives and History Society is sponsoring the marker.

The sesquicentennial commission works with local partners to tell the stories of the Civil War’s effect on communities in Arkansas.

To date, 52 markers have been installed, according to a commission news release.

Student, 18, dies

in Tulsa shooting

TULSA - Authorities in Tulsa said an 18-year-old aviation student is dead after a shooting at an off-campus apartment complex.

Police said the shooting happened Thursday night at a north Tulsa apartment complex across the street from Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology.

The Tulsa World reported that 18-year-old Chaz Fain was killed in the shooting.

Three other students were hurt, but police said their injuries aren’t lifethreatening.

Authorities said the four were attending a “social gathering” at one of the apartments. Police later arrested Mark Hopkins, 41, on one complaint of firstdegree murder and three counts of shooting with intent to kill.

Police shootout

leaves man dead

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - A man involved in a shootout with Springfield police is dead after wounding a detective and engaging in a second gunbattle with officers.

The Springfield News-Leader reports the man fired at a detective who was serving a search warrant early Friday. The officer was grazed and returned fire, striking the suspect.

Police Lt. Ben King said the suspect later emerged from the house and exchanged gunfire again with police. Witnesses said the second exchange happened around 8:30 a.m., and authorities confirmed the man’s death three hours later.

Man, 67, charged

in child-porn case

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.

  • Court documents said child porn was found on a southwest Missouri school board member’s electronic devices while authorities were investigating reports that he exposed himself.

John Lewis, 67, of Sarcoxie was charged Friday in federal court in Springfield with possessing child pornography.

The U.S. attorney’s office said Lewis was arrested before Thursday night’s Sarcoxie School Board meeting. He remains in federal custody and doesn’t have an attorney.

The affidavit said Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers contacted Lewis while investigatingreports that he exposed himself to high school students who were working for him on his farm outside Sarcoxie. Troopers obtained a search warrant and reported finding 19 multimedia files of child pornography and 113 images of suspected child pornography.

Authorities said children as young as 5 were shown.

Police attribute

death to ‘huffing’

OSAGE BEACH, Mo.

  • Authorities in central Missouri are citing a recent death to highlight the dangers of “huffing” vapors from aerosol products.

Osage Beach police said emergency responders found a 33-year-old man dead Monday morning at a motel.

Over three days, the man and a female companion had purchased more than 50 cans of an aerosol product that’s used to remove dust.

A news release said all the cans were empty. Police said the high from “huffing” lasts just 15 to 30 seconds and must be repeated several times a day to achieve the desired effect.

Deployment of 50 put off, to be reset

FORT SILL, Okla.

  • Officials at Fort Sill said the deployment of 50 soldiers who are preparing for an assignment in South America has been delayed.

Base spokesman Keith Pannell said Friday’s planned deployment of the soldiers with 3rd Battalion, 13rd Field Artillery will be rescheduled. No reason for the delay was given.

Pannell said the soldiers will be providing security on a Navy hospital ship in addition to humanitarian aid and assisting visitors and patients on the ship.

The soldiers are to go first from the base at Lawton to Norfolk, Va., for training with the Navy before they leave for South America.

19-year-old held

in theft of panties

WRIGHT CITY, Mo.

  • An eastern Missouri man is facing charges in a series of burglaries after authorities reported found 59 pair of women’s underwear and other items in his bedroom.

Michael Stout, 19, of Wright City is charged with four counts of burglary, four counts of stealing and one count of property damage.

He is jailed in lieu of $100,000 cash-only bond.

Warren County deputies were called to a home Wednesday after a 16-yearold girl reported hearing an intruder in the bathroom.

Police said the intruder ran into a wooded area but police dogs helped track him down.

Police accused Stout of watching female residents of his neighborhood and targeting their homes.

In addition to the underwear, police said they found other female clothing, sexual implements, photographs and feminine hygiene products.
