GOLF UCA’s Angles finishes second

Central Arkansas sophomore Pep Angles shot a 1-over-par 73 on Wednesday and finished second at the Southland Conference men’s championship at the Pete Dye Signature Course at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas.

UCA finished second overall behind Southeastern Louisiana. The Bears had rounds of 299-308-299 to finish at 906. Southeastern Louisiana shot 301-304-288-893.

Angles finished at 76-73-73-222, two strokes behind Southeastern Louisiana’s Rhys West (73-76-71-220).

Also for the Bears, senior Austen Moix tied for eighth (74-80-75-229) and junior Richard Farmer (86-76-74-236) tied for 18th. James Newton (70-79-89-238) finished tied for 25th. Jacob Oaks tied for 28th (79-85-77-241).

UALR fifth, ASU eighth at Sun Belt

UALR finished fifth while Arkansas State came in eighth at the Sun Belt Conference men’s championship in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

The Trojans (293-294-307-894) were led by Nicklaus Benton (70-73-79) and Alfred Kerstis (75-73-74), who tied for 13th after shooting a 222. Colby Benton (73-71-79-223) tied for 18th while Johann Voss (75-77-75-227) tied for 28th. Nick Zimmerman (76-78-79-233) tied for 41st.

Easton Key (74-75-74-223) led the Red Wolves (300-305-301-906). He finished in a tie for 18th. Chance Holden (73-78-74-225) tied for 22nd and Seth Garner (76-76-76-228) tied for 31st. Wessel Zwiegers (77-76-77-230) tied for 37th while Matt Howton (87-78-81-246) finished in 53rd.

North Texas won its second consecutive conference championship after finishing at 871 (295-287-289). South Alabama’s Lane Hulse (68-74-72-214), a 2009 Fordyce High graduate, won the individual championship. SOFTBALL UCA loses at Louisiana-Monroe

Alexis Cacioppo hit two home runs, including a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Louisiana-Monroe (19-27) beat Central Arkansas (31-17) 3-2 on Wednesday in Monroe, La.

UCA led 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh. But Haley McCall led off the inning with a bloop single. On a 1-1 count, Cacippo hit a home run off of Kelsie Armstrong to right-center field to give the Warhawks the victory.

Sarah Bigej and Sam Forrest each had RBI singles for the Bears. Armstrong allowed 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6.
