Bulky Waste, Paper, Pill Cleanups Planned for Saturday

FAYETTEVILLE — Residents can drop off bulky waste, shred last year’s tax documents and dispose of unwanted or expired medication for free Saturday.

The third of four spring cleanups is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Shaver Foods parking lot, 1367 S. Beechwood Ave., and the city’s Solid Waste and Recycling Facility, 1560 S. Happy Hollow Road. Furniture, appliances, carpet, wallboard and other large items will be taken from anyone with a recent copy of a city water bill.

Paper-shredding and prescription pill collection is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the World Gym parking lot, 2035 N. College Ave. The event is an effort to curb identity theft and prevent medication from being flushed in toilets and into waterways. Participants are asked to bring no more than five average size boxes of documents to shred.

Paper-shredding is restricted to city residents. The prescription pill collection is open to all.

Household hazardous waste — such as paint, batteries, cleaning supplies, automotive fluids, tires, pesticides and herbicides — will not be accepted Saturday. That material can be taken to Washington County’s special waste collection site, 2615 Brink Drive, during regular business hours.

Medical waste, electronic waste, brush, leaves and grass clippings will not be accepted either. Yard waste disposal is available to residents at the curb or at the city’s compost facility, 1708 S. Armstrong Ave.

A final spring cleanup is scheduled for May 4 at Woodland Junior High School, 1 E. Poplar St., and the Center Street Church of Christ, 310 W. Center St..
