Banned Book Week Planned

— “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “The Catcher in the Rye” have been challenged for decades in libraries and schools across the country.

Throughout history, critics have tried to ban books they considered lewd, bigoted or sacrilegious.

The Fayetteville Public Library in conjunction with the American Library Association will celebrate people’s freedom to read during Banned Book Week next week.

Patrons are invited to the library from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday to read up to two-minute passages from their favorite banned books. The readings will be video recorded and uploaded to the American Library Association’s Banned Book Week YouTube channel, according to a library news release.

Film adaptations of several banned books will be screened at 6 p.m. in the Walker Community Room of the library, 401 W. Mountain St.

Films include:

• “Of Mice and Men” (PG-13): Monday

• “The Outsiders” (PG): Tuesday

• “Slaughterhouse-Five” (R): Wednesday
