GIRLS STATE GOLF: Roachell up five strokes; eyes fourth title

— Summar Roachell admitted she did not give herself many birdie opportunities Monday, but the Conway senior’s short game paved the way for a five-shot advantage for today’s final round of the Class 7A girls state golf tournament.

Roachell, the three-time defending state champion, fired a 2-over par 72 at the Conway Country Club. Fayetteville sophomore Anna Grace Lavy shot a 77 and is in second place.

Taming the Conway course, which played at 5,044 yards Monday, was no easy chore. None of the other 55 competitors managed to break 82 and only 18 players were able to avoid shooting in the 100s.

“I really did not hit the ball that well today,” Roachell said. “I put myself in a lot of upand-down situations.

Luckily my chipping and putting made up for a little bit of that. It wasn’t that I was super off, but I wasn’t getting my [tee] shots as close as I normally do.”

Roachell got off to a good start on her home course, hitting her second shot on the 360-yard, par-4 No. 1 on the green. She made a 22-foot birdie putt.

“I’ve played that shot a hundred times and that’s the first time I’ve hit it,” Roachell said. “But yes, it’s a good feeling when you can start the state tournament with a birdie.”

Three holes later, Roachell’s tee shot on the 119-yard No. 4 came to rest 5 feet from the pin. It was her final birdie of the day.

Lavy started her round with four consecutive bogeys, but over the last eight holes, the Fayetteville golfer was one shot better than Roachell.

Roachell finished the frontnine with a 1-over 36. She started the back nine with eight consecutive pars before taking a bogey on No. 18.

“I just wasn’t sharp,” Roachell said. “I didn’t key in on the flag at all, but this course is not easy. Even from the red [ladies] tees, this is a very unforgiving course. I told myself before the round that anything from a 1 under to a 3 over would be pretty good.”

The girls will tee off at 9 a.m. for today’s second round.

Kidds boost Spring Hill

DANVILLE - Lakyn Kidd’s tap-in for birdie on the second playoff hole gave her the Class 2A individual championship at Chamberlyne Country Club on Monday afternoon.

That came after she shot a team-low 92 to lead Spring Hill to its first 2A team championship.

“This is our first time to win it and our medalist shot lights-out today,” Spring Hill Coach John Collier said.

Spring Hill’s total was 315, 20 strokes better than runnerup Salem at 335. Sidney Orr shot a 110 and Kidd’s sister, Mallory, shot 113 to complement Lakyn Kidd’s effort on the par-72 course.

“We’re not used to hills being from south Arkansas and our greens are slower so we didn’t know what to do when we got to these; they were so fast,” Collier said.

Kidd figured out the green on the second playoff hole against Cutter Morning Star’s Tessie Griner. Her 30-foot approach shot was on line and nearly on target, stoppinginches from the cup.

“I was shaking all over,” Kidd said. “I’m glad the playoff was with Tess.”

The two friends were even through the next-to-last shot. Griner’s drive drifted to theleft 40 yards away and nearly parallel with Kidd’s shot.

Griner’s shot fell well short of Kidd’s.

“I was excited to make the playoff,” Griner said. “I was a little letdown and mad at my game.”

Griner said the course had been harder in certain areas. And in some cases, a par-4 turned into a triple bogey on the back nine.

Salem was led to second place by McKenzie Jewell’s 100 and Savannah Henley’s 116.
