PUBLIC VIEWPOINT: Mormon Critique Out Of Context

Regarding Carolynn Young’s Aug. 24 letter about Mitt Romney and Mormons: Her statement about the Book of Mormon was out of context. It refers to a cursed people with dark skin - specifi cally a particular people at a particular time. It doesn’t say in the Book of Mormon that all people with dark skin at all times all over the world are cursed. Many people in many countries of many races are members of the church in good standing today. It’s not just white people, but African people, Latin American people,Asian people - all over the world and throughout the United States. People of many races and in many countries belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Whether or not you support Mitt Romney is your choice, but don’t accuse him of being racist because of his religion.

MERTES FOR SCHOOL BOARD

In pondering the upcoming school board runoff, I would like toshare my support for a current board member - Kim. A former teacher, Mrs. Mertes listens to what the teachers of Bentonville Public Schools have to say, understanding that the students are the teachers’ first priority. Mrs. Mertes cares about the students and chooses to gain fi rsthand knowledge by regularly visiting classrooms, discussing issues with students and staff. She also visits student homes to hear from the community in regard to school matters that affect us all. Her own children attended Bentonville schools, and are now successful adults in the community. She speaks up, doesn’t cater to special groups, and treats all fairly.

Kim Mertes has been actively involved in our school system for many years and has been a board member who is knowledgeable and who cares about our schools. It would be in our best interest to keep her involved.
