South Fayetteville diner offers a huge variety of dishes served with a smile

Mexico Viejo serves more than 100 selections, including vegetarian combinations, appetizers, soups, salads, fajitas, entrees, house specialties and desserts.

Customers are greeted quickly and delivered house-made corn tortilla chips and salsa.

“We make everything in house — the salsa, queso, beans, desserts — we marinate our own meats,” said manager Gonzalo Leon. “It is all prepared fresh daily.”

An impressive lunch menu is offered 11 a.m.-3 p.m. daily and is priced from $3.49 to $6.49. A number of combination plates offer enchiladas, burritos, chile rellenos, fajita tacos, quesadillas and more. Specialty items such as huevos rancheros or huevos con chorizo satisfy the brunch lovers. Other selections include taco salad, beef tamales, spicy chicken chimichangas and taquitos Mexicanos.

For dinner, 28 combination plates are offered for $6.99. There are also many chicken, pork, beef and seafood entrees. While the menu offers most Mexican dishes one can imagine, custom requests can also be fulfilled.

One loyal patron ordered his own creation so often that it became a fixture on the menu. Steven’s Special of grilled chicken strips served on a bed of rice topped with queso is now one of the most popular dishes.

Other house specialties include the Burrito Mexico Viejo — a flour tortilla stuffed with beef or chicken, topped with lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream, and served with rice and beans; Quesadillas Mexicans that serves two quesadillas stuffed with beef, cheese, beans and a side of lettuce, guacamole, tomato and sour cream; and the fajitas served with a skillet of tomatoes, onions and bell peppers with a side plate of rice, beans, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo and tortillas.

The Enchiladas Razorback is three enchiladas stuffed with shrimp, crab and cheese served with lettuce, tomato and guacamole.

The menu also offers ceviche; pork chops; steak and shrimp; and chicken and rice.

A number of children’s plates give guests that are 12 and younger a fine selection. In addition to Mexican dishes, there is a cheeseburger, hot dog, grilled cheese and chicken tenders served with fries.

With a full bar, Mexico Viejo offers margaritas for $1.95 every Monday and Thursday between 5-10 p.m.
