Uekman foundation pledges $100,000 to UA scholarship fund

FAYETTEVILLE — The Garrett Uekman Foundation pledged $100,000 on Monday to help fund an athletic scholarship at the University of Arkansas in memory of the late Razorbacks football player.

Scholarship announced to honor Garrett Uekman

The family of Garrett Uekman, along with the Arkansas Razorbacks, announced on Monday afternoon that a scholarship will be made to honor Uekman. The Garrett Uekman Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a member of the football team that started as a walk-on and preferably will go to a tight end.

The gift was announced during a press conference in Uekman's hometown of Little Rock with his parents, Danny and Michelle Uekman, and sister, Meagan, in attendance. UA athletics director Jeff Long also attended.

All athletes will be eligible for the Garrett Uekman Memorial Scholarship one it is fully funded, according to the UA, with one selected each year in perpetuity. Preference will be given to football players, in particular tight ends and walk-ons.

Garrett Uekman died Nov. 20, 2011 because of complications stemming from an enlarged heart. The 19-year-old was a redshirt freshman on Arkansas' football team.

A foundation in his name was established earlier this year to help fund heart research research and education, as well as help fund scholarships.
