Wildcats overcome slow start, top Wolves

— Lucas Reed completed 18 of 26 passes for 350 yards and 3 touchdowns Friday to lead El Dorado to a 31-17 victory over Lake Hamilton at Memorial Stadium.

El Dorado, which managed 79 yards rushing, improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in 6A-South play.

Sandy Brown had five receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats, while Jarvis Davis had five receptions for 89 yards.

“We can always get better. But, the receivers — Sandy Brown, Ty Owens, Jarvis Davis, Treyshawn Shutes, Ron Murphy — they all made great plays today,” said Reed, who completed 8-of-9 passes for 136 yards in the second half.

Lake Hamilton closed the deficit to 17-14 midway in the third and 24-17 on Omar Vega’s 35-yard field goal with 9:47 left in the game.

But, El Dorado responded with an 82-yard drive in eight plays. Reed hit Davis for 20 and Marque Burris for 14. He threw a quick pass to Brown, who got two blocks from Davis en route to a 30-yard completion to the 16. Burris would hurdle his way into the end zone from five yards out with 7:39 left in the game.

The Wolves’ final two drives never got going thanks to linebacker Patrick Seweje, who stopped both with slacks.

“We hit some big plays or it would’ve been a rough night because they were really physical. They gave us some problems but our defense played good all night,” El Dorado Coach Scott Reed said.

“It seemed like whenever we needed a play defensively, we made it. We made a couple fourth down stops that were huge. Our kids just keep hanging in there. They’ve been in close games before. I’m proud of the win.”

Clay Jessie threw a slant to Trever Mittelstadt, who ran 41 yards to the end zone when the defender misplayed the ball and Lake Hamilton took a 7-3 lead in the second quarter.

The Wildcats’ subsequent 87-yard drive included Reed’s 31-yard pass to Shutes on fourth-and-15. Two plays later, Reed hit Brown on a 4-yard TD pass. Harter’s kick put El Dorado up 10-7 with 6:32 left in the second.

The Wolves quickly went three-and-punt and El Dorado struck quickly as Reed hit Burris out of the backfield on a 54-yard touchdown pass down the middle of the field with 5:16 left in the half to take a 17-7 lead.
