The nation in brief

California gas prices rise again

LOS ANGELES - California motorists faced another day of record-breaking gasoline prices Sunday, though relief appeared to be on the way.

In its latest update early Sunday, AAA reported that the statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $4.655. Saturday’s average of $4.6140 was the highest since June 19, 2008, when it was $4.6096.

The four-penny-per-gallon jump Sunday was less than Saturday’s increase, which was 12 cents.

Sunday’s price, like Saturday’s, was the highest in the nation, with the Golden State overtaking Hawaii as the state with the most expensive fuel because of a temporary reduction in supply.

Gov. Jerry Brown ordered state smog regulators Sunday to allow winter-blend gasoline to be sold in California earlier than usual to help drive prices down. Winter-blend gas typically isn’t sold until after Oct. 31. Few refineries outside the state are currently making summer-blend gas, putting the pressure on already taxed California manufacturers.

3 women drowned in car at shipyard

NEWPORT, R.I. - Three women found dead in a submerged car at a Rhode Island shipyard were friends who worked on some of the world’s finest yachts, according to a business owner in the luxury boat industry.

The car was found at about 6:30 a.m. Friday sticking out of about 4 feet of water in Newport Harbor at the privately owned Newport Shipyard.

Police believe that the driver missed a turn in foggy conditions, and that the car had been in the water for at least several hours before it was discovered.

Authorities identified the women as Jennifer Way of North Kingstown, R.I.; Louise Owen of Wales in the United Kingdom, and Femmetje Staring of the Netherlands. All were 39 years old.

Peter Wilson, co-founder and co-owner of Newport based MCM, which represents yacht owners, said the three women became close friends while working in the yachting industry.

Police haven’t disclosed who was driving the car and it’s not clear why the women were at the shipyard.

Authorities said there was no evidence of foul play, and the investigation is continuing.

Supply ship heads to space station

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - A commercial supply ship is on its way to the International Space Station.

The California-based SpaceX launched its unmanned Falcon rocket from Cape Canaveral on Sunday night. Aboard the rocket was a Dragon capsule holding 1,000 pounds of cargo for the three station residents, including chocolate-vanilla swirl ice cream.

This is the first Dragon launch under a $1.6 billion contract between SpaceX and NASA. The contract calls for 12 resupply missions.

A Dragon flew to the space station in May, but it was a test, so nothing vital was aboard.

The newest Dragon is hauling key experiments and other precious gear.

Dragon will reach the orbiting lab Wednesday.
