Red Wolves dump Boll Weevils

— Trey Finn scored 15 points, Brandon Peterson had 15 rebounds and Arkansas State shot 55 percent from the field while beating Arkansas-Monticello 76-47 in its home opener Tuesday night at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro.

Finn made 6 of 7 shots from the field, including 3 of 4 three-pointers, and had five rebounds for the Red Wolves (1-1), who were playing three days after dropping their season opener to Dayton on Saturday.

Ed Townsel scored 14 points on 3-of-6 three-point shooting, Kendrick Washington added 13 and Peterson had 12 points and 15 rebounds for Arkansas State, which made 29 of 53 shots and 9 of 20 three-pointers.

Kori Forge and A.J. Calhoun each scored eight points for UAM (1-0), which used the game as its final exhibition before continuing its regular season schedule against Southwest Baptist on Thursday.

The Boll Weevils were held to 19-of-54 shooting, including 3 of 20 from threepoint range.

SOUTHLAND MEN

CENTRAL ARKANSAS 108, HENDRIX COLLEGE 65

CONWAY — LaQuentin Miles scored 17 points to lead seven Central Arkansas players with 10 points or more in a home-opening victory at the Farris Center. The Bears (1-1) shot 55.1 percent from the field and made 12 three-pointers. Miles made 8 of 13 shots with 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Robert Crawford and Ryan Williams each scored 14 points, while DeShone McClure made 4 of 5 three-pointers and finished with 12 points. Jarvis Garner also scored 12 for the Bears. Daouda Berete added 11 points and Jordan Hanks had 10. UCA started the game on a 20-4 run over the first five minutes and the lead twice stretched to 24 points before leading 52-30 at halftime. Jaren Riley led the NCAA Division III Warriors with 18 points.

SOUTHLAND WOMEN

CENTRAL ARKANSAS 59, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 46

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Megan Herbert scored 32 points and had a career-high 24 rebounds in helping Central Arkansas to a road victory. It was the 10th 30-point game and third 20-rebound game of Herbert’s career, but the first time she hit both marks in the same game. It was the 68th time she had 10 or more points and rebounds in the same game, moving her into a tie for ninth most ever in NCAA Division I. Central Arkansas (2-0) made 27 of 36 free throws, while Southern Illinois (0-1) was 4 of 9. The Sugar Bears limited the Salukis to 28.7 percent shooting and held a 55-39 rebounding advantage. Britney Gowans added 7 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists in 27 minutes off the bench for the Bears.
