PUBLIC VIEWPOINT Fayetteville Parks Are Green, Blue

PIPE DOWN ABOUT PRAYER

The recent study of parkland by University of Arkansas recreation and sport management graduate students paints Fayetteville as a green town.

Unfortunately the article about their study doesn’t tell us that Fayetteville parks are also very blue.

In looking at the Fayetteville Parks and Recreation Department’s 2011 annual report, you will find our three large parks are Lake Sequoyah,Lake Fayetteville and Lake Wilson. These three old water supply lakes contain 739 acres of water or about 22 percent of the city’s total parkland of 3,380 acres. Thus our city parks are painted blue and green.

Included in the total parkland acreage is 241 acres of undeveloped land for a south pass park. For this park to be developed in the future it will take green backs.

Iam so tired of diatribes from conservatives about prayer. They want to pray in school, at public breakfasts, on the streets and television, and if someone argues with this use of public space, they shriek that their constitutional rights are being taken away.

All this causes me to doubt they have read their own literature. See Matthew 6:5,6, New International Version: “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
