The Rep’s new 'Normal'

If “normal” is in the eye of the beholder, then consider the varied views of the word in Tom Kitt and Bryan Yorkey’s 2010 Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, Next to Normal, Jack W. Hill writes in Thursday’s Arkansas Weekend section.

A rock score provides the soundtrack for an examination of a dysfunctional family in which the mother has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. More specifically, she is said to be “depressive with delusional episodes.”

The play, which also won three Tony Awards in 2009, will open at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre this weekend.

Though the show is still on its first national tour, the Rep managed what is considered a theatrical “coup” by securing the rights to produce it.
